There will inevitably be comparisons between “Nature’s Most Astounding Events” and Planet Earth. While I can’t say that this unusual series is quite as groundbreaking, it is smooth beautiful tremendous and has some astonishing footage.

As its title suggests, “Nature’s Most Fantastic Events” focuses on some of the most fantastic events in the animal kingdom. I actually like the fact that each episode stays in one space (as opposed to the device Planet Earth jumped around the world) . However, I plan it could have gone beyond Africa and North America. I also understanding this series had some wonderful footage of birds and whales, particularly of birds underwater. Those scenes alone develop the series worth buying.

One note: I originally watched this series on the Discovery Channel. For some reason, Discovery musty another narrator (Hasani Issa), not David Attenborough. As viewers of nature documentaries know, Attenborough’s infectious enthusiasm makes his programs truly a joy to peruse. As such, this DVD will be distinguished better than the televised version for simply having Attenborough as the narrator.

Now, onto the episodes:

1) Arctic Summer:

This episode focuses on Arctic environments and includes many of the usual suspects, such as Polar Bears. There was a broad scene with baby Gillymots learning to soar. The birds essentially jump off a substantial cliff and try to land in the ocean. Many miss and bounce along the ground - but survive! This scene evoked the improper scene in Planet Earth with the ducklings jumping out of the tree - but many times higher, with Arctic foxes waiting at the bottom to eat any unlucky baby Gillymots.

2) Grizzly Wilderness:

This episode follows the Salmon migration in the pacifc northwest - and all of the animals trying to eat them. There’s some immense shots of the Salmon swimming through the water. In one shot, a Salmon is swimming through a waterfall, jumps out of the water, and - in stupid motion - flies toward the camera. There’s also a chilly scene of a expressionless Salmon decomposing in lickety-split motion.

3) Surviving the Serengeti:

Unfortunately, there wasn’t mighty fresh in this episode. It covers the wildebeest migration in East Africa. The wildebeest migration is certainly one of nature’s most improbable events, but the Serengeti is also one of nature’s most documented events.

4) Army of Predators:

This episode covers the army of predators that traipse Sardines. I loved the footage of Gannets plunge-diving into the water to eat fish. The birds recognize like they’re swimming underwater. I’ve seen some other documentaries trying to hold birds underwater (including Blue Planet: Seas of Life), but this scene was by far the best. The episode climaxes with a battle royale between Gannets, Dolphins, Fur Seals, Sharks, and Bryde’s Whale all chasing the Sardines.

5) Kalahari Flood:

This episode focuses on southern Africa, with the drying up of the Okavango River in Botswana. The footage of the Termites up finish looks ample in HD. These scenes were even better quality than the Termite footage in Life in the Undergrowth. Also lots of elephants wallowing around.

6) Pacific Feast:

This is another underwater battle royale, with Stellar Sea Lions, Orcas, and Humpback Whales all going in for some Herring. This episode includes some of the best blu-ray footage of whales I’ve seen, with extensive footage of Humpbacks hunting using “bubble nets.” The “whale song” that the Humpbacks spend while “bubble netting” is haunting. After watching this, it is absolutely sure that these animals are shining - coordinating group action, using tools (bubbles), and taking advantage of the Herrings’ weaknesses. There’s also a enormous shot of a Humpback exhaling through its blowhole and catching a rainbow on its breath. The mist from the blowhole changes colors from blue to green to yellow to red. I can’t characterize what it looked like other than to say it was comely improbable. This is easily some of the best Humpback footage ever.

In short, if you bask in nature documentaries, don’t miss out on “Nature’s Most Astounding”! It has extraordinary footage of birds underwater and whales. While there are some obscene points (notably the Serengeti), the best moments far exceed the ocean scenes in Planet Earth.

This is another incredible series tubby of pleasing images and a wealth of information. The Blu-Ray release is a bit disappointing as it only includes the novel narration by David Attenborough. With the region available on Blu-Ray I glean this unacceptable!

Considering that Blu-Ray is pushing to be top dog in the video market, you would consider they would want to include some enticing features and they have dropped the ball here somewhat. This release should have included the tedious the scenes footage and both versions of the chronicle. …..why not?

The represent and sound contemplate very agreeable here, but it’s in 1080i?? Why not 1080p? It’s unbiased a shame this isn’t as ample as I expected it to be. I have recently bought a Blu-Ray player, but I’m not finding many stellar releases to assume. I’m positive of time I will acquire some, but if you haven’t bought a Blu-Ray player yet, there seems to be no bustle.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the series, but never gave it a see. Or perhaps you were warned by others that the language was so profane as to render it unwatchable. Factual, the series isn’t for anyone under the age of 18, but it must be understood that this semi-historical allotment was written to describe the sincere dialect and social tenor of the dwelling at that time. Deadwood was a rough station without dependable law, and gold was on everyone’s mind. All the elements for tremendous drama were there. Greed, corruption, deceipt, innocence, morality (or a lack thereof), hope, disapprove, panic, addiction, slay, jealousy and worship. Deadwood truly represents a kind of sociological behold of human evolution within a laissez faire society.

It was sure from episode 1 that the recent Deadwood series on HBO was something special. By episode 4, I was definite that Emmy nominations/awards were imminent. The present was largely ignored by the Emmys, likely sufferering from a combination of “newcomer syndrome” and overshadowing by The Sopranos. But invent no mistake, it was more than satisfactory with the actors comprising a shapely balance of the familiar and the outlandish. Regardless of fame however, there isn’t an off performance to be found in the season. Nor is there a grossly derivitive one. The characters are all satisfyingly deep, nuanced and often downright quirky.

The writing, as is the case with most HBO fresh series, was entirley absorbing with a character and rhythm all its fill. It is to be savored as a glorious wine or concerto. Unlike many adult drama series on the “other networks”, Deadwood never loses its momentum. There is no need to manipulate the audience with cheap antics to regain them to care week to week. The anecdote, actors and writing capture care of that. Each episode flows to the next with fantastic fluidity while always maintaining an anticipatory mood.

There is really no need to fetch into space points as it would require a review the size of the Deadwood script and would involve spoiling powerful of the drama that one should experience as purely as possible. Suffice it to say if you bask in adult themed series such as The Sopranos, you will cherish Deadwood. Even if you don’t like westerns, it won’t matter. The acting, writing, and region are unbiased that pleasurable. Give it a chance. You won’t be sorry.

This is my nominee for best original drama. This revisionist western will knock your socks off with its provocative characters and atmosphere. It’s May 1876 traditional Montana marshal Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and his business partner Sol Star (John Hawkes) launch a hardware business in the gold-mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Deadwood becomes the crossroads for the celebrated, nasty and the people they ruin. Bullock meets Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and has a rush in with Gem Saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane) . Swearengen lives up to his name; he’s a man with the foulest mouth one can imagine and a aesthetic bad fellow to nefarious. McShane’s portrayal of Swearengen makes him one of the most complex villans this side of Tony Soprano.

“Deadwood” becomes the nexus for some of the most notable figures of the aged west creating a large opportunity for storytelling from writer/creator/producer David Milch (”NYPD Blue”) . A sprawling, down and dirty revisionist western, the pilot directed by Walter Hill (”Southern Comfort”, “Hard Times”, “The Warriors”) features edifying performances from Ian McShane, Brad Dourif, Timothy Olyphant, Molly McShane, Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe. Authentic good down to the pig crap, “Deadwood” features the colossal dialogue, action and storytelling skills we’ve approach to quiz from Milch, Hill and the other collaborators on this cable TV series. A warning for viewers–you’ll hear a lot of abominable words because, well, because Milch feels that folks spoke like that succor then.

There may only be 12 episodes included here but they’re all high quality. My only complaint is that the series probably could have been packaged with more episodes per disc making the plot less cumbersome. The label is a bit steep for what you’re getting as well but given the quality of the series, packaging and extras, makes this a worthwhile edition to choose up.

Twelve episodes spread over six discs presented in a high quality anamorphic widescreen presentation, ensures that the image quality of the present is kept titillating, sure and with nice, robust rustic colors. The 5.1 sound mix actively surrounds you in the environment of the obsolete west. Since great of this drama is dialogue based the 5.1 atmosphere comes across most effectively when there’s action sequences.

Although this isn’t an extra per se, the designing and packaging of this series makes “Deadwood” special suitable away. One of the best packaged boxed sets I’ve seen, the box resembles the Star Trek: The Next Generation sets with a sturdy outer box and an accordion fold out holder for the DVDs. It’s mammoth, pudgy and personally I like the package that map. Clear, it takes up a lot of state but, hey, it’s better than some of the flimsy packaging we’ve seen lately with these expense sets. While there isn’t any booklet to mumble you about the note, each episode has a brief synopsis of each one. There’s also a preview and recap for each and every episode included.

There’s a featurette on the making of the present with a obliging helping of interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Milch and the cast. Featuring vintage photographs of the exact Deadwood. Milch, the cast and crew appear in the featurette as well discussing the intersection of fiction and reality in this 25 shrimp examine into the inspiration for the present. Milch and his collaborators discuss both the attraction of the town and the mythos that it represented. Essentially a promo fragment for the series it also provides a nice introduction to the series with a superior helping of clips from the present. Interviews with local historians highlight the featurette on the staunch Deadwood. Keith Carradine and Milch interview each other for “The Language of the Frail West”. There’s a number of commentary tracks with Milch and most of the main cast. The quality of the commentary tracks vary quite a bit but all are informative and spellbinding.

A terrific series well packaged (but you extinguish up paying for the packaging) with righteous extras, “Deadwood” will sustain you fervent in the petty dealings of saloon owner Swearengen and his conflicts with the residents and prospectors of the town.

I Soliti Ignoti- I absolutely esteem this movie. It is one large italian comedy with a sparkling cast at its best in portraying the simplistic and realistic roles of petty criminals. Because of the nature of the characters and their ridiculous behaviour in the proceedings of their procedure to buy a pawnshop, the viewers won’t be able to refrain from laughter and bask in this gang’s hopeless adventure. For anyone who loves this movie as noteworthy as I do, I recommend to gape its sequel made a year later by Nanni Loy: “Audace Colpo dei Soliti Ignoti”, with only the absence of Mastroianni but the addition of Nino Manfredi- Clear it’s not as broad as the first, but having liked these characters so grand it is natural that one would want to ogle them benefit in action with yet another “scientifically” schemed project along with all their mishaps as usual…and of course, a minute more of the unfolding romance of the couple portrayed by Claudia Cardinale and Renato Salvatori. Unfortunately this movie will be hard to regain, and it is without subtitles. (Do not confuse this with a third sequel made 20 yrs later which, by the procedure, I do not recommend at all.) For anyone who hasn’t seen Enormous Deal On Madonna St, please do peep it.

This Italian parody of Jules Dassin’s *Rififi* turns out to be, after all is said and done, a better movie. Interestingly, it finally seems more current than Dassin’s crime movie, despite its sure mocking of Italian Neo-Realist pretensions AND the hard-bitten *Rififi* (itself a derivation of 1940’s American film noirs) . *Big Deal on Madonna Street* basically justifies director Mario Monicelli’s career . . . at least in my eyes, for I’ve never noteworthy cared for most of his movies. His films have a very narrow interest, meaning, you really have to be Italian to “fetch” them. In *Big Deal*, Monicelli goes for something more universal with this spoof of the massively infuential French noir, and attains sundry brilliancies. Firstly, the characters are unforgettably individualized, with tics and situations that often turn the gangster archetype on its head. Marcello Mastroianni, for instance, is babysitting his infant while his WIFE serves a short term in jail for smuggling! And somehow the director manages to mock the post-War Italian cinema’s unblinking concept (a notion which was monotonously repeated, starting with Rosselini’s *Open City*) of the desperate jam of the country’s working-class while AT THE SAME TIME carrying on most poignantly that tradition. For a comedy, there’s a heck of a lot of dirty jails, dirty streets, and dirty people. The view of a colossal robbery — a one-time “ample glean” — is natural on these streets. The overall tone is light, but the grim realities are not hidden. This is not a “hilarious” comedy . . . at least until we come by to the Immense Caper, which is a smorgasbord of silly ineptness. I won’t extinguish it by describing it; observe it for yourself. By the draw, this movie was itself re-made (more or less) twice: Louis Malle tried to Americanize it in his *Crackers* (don’t bother), and Woody Allen lightly essayed it unbiased recently with his *Small-time Crooks*. Having praised *Big Deal on Madonna Street*, I will add the caveat that a prior knowledge of *Rififi* and Italian Neo-Realist cinema will enhance your enjoyment of the film. [I'm sorry to characterize that Criterion's DVD is, simply do, infamous. No features but a trailer, and the subtitles are poorly done, flashing on and off the shroud like subliminal messages. As this is a later release (#113, I contemplate), there are no excuses for the shoddiness. It's handsome to put a question to excellence from Criterion, particularly because their products are so expensive. Oh well.]

MGM released a DVD edition of “The Friendly, the Terrible and the Gruesome” in the slack 1990s, but it had few extras, a mono soundtrack, and a scratched print. Finally, MGM has given Sergio Leone’s Western fable the double-disc special edition it deserves. The print is restored and as obvious as I’ve ever seen it, the sound is now an fabulous 5.1 Surround (listen to the glass falling off Tuco after he springs through the window in the opening sequence!) nineteen minutes of footage from the Italian new have been restored, and the discs are packed with extras. Even the packaging is great: a sturdy interlocking box, with the DVDs kept in the upper and bottom parts of the two lids. Also inside the box are cards containing posters for the film in five different countries.

The film, like most of the European Westerns of the 1960s, was critically disregarded in its day. The Modern York Times said of it: “the most expensive, pious, and repellent movie in the history of its irregular genre. There is scarcely a moment’s respite from the distress.” It’s wonderful how people missed the brilliance of this movie, which turned Western conventions upside down in such a wonderfully bizarre, European device. Now the film is considered a classic, and only Sergio Leone’s believe “Once Upon a Time in the West” (another spacious 2 DVD position, by the design) has more respect in the genre. Leone’s unfamiliar style — stretched out time, obsession with close-ups and indecent wide-shots, focus on rituals, and exercise of Morricone’s wild and avant-garde bag — are all in elephantine force in this myth of three treasure-seekers searching for a cache of gold coins on the Texas-New Mexico border during the Civil War. The implacable and unflappable ‘hero’ Blondie (Clint Eastwood), the crazy silly bandit Tuco (Eli Wallach), and the calculating wrong sadist Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) noxious each other’s paths amidst the senseless violence of the war. Leone perfectly contrasts the self-interested men with the greater backdrop of the tragedy of war. It’s a strangely emotionally affecting narrate despite its focus on three men who are level-headed from normal society and seem not to care about anything but money. So many individual scenes stand out for their virtuosity that the movie a parade of “greatest hits.” Most incredible of all is “The Ecstasy of Gold” sequence where Tuco dashes madly through a cemetery, looking for the grave that might own the gold. Morricone’s music here is especially overwhelming.

Nineteen minutes of footage have been restored that were never shown in the American prints. The scenes integrate perfectly into the film, and after seeing them once, you won’t be able to imagine they were ever missing. Among the scenes are Angel Eyes visiting a destroyed fort; Tuco hiring bandits to succor him trip Blondie; Blondie and Angel Eyes having a face-to-face when they first status out together to acquire the gold; and some extra conversation between Tuco and Blondie in the desert. However, these scenes were never dubbed into English in the 1960s. Therefore, the DVD producers had to newly dub them. Eli Wallach and Clint Eastwood do their bear voices. Disc 1 has audio commentary by Richard Shickel, a film historian who wrote Eastwood’s biography and also did commentary on Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” DVD. His comments can be radiant dry, and he focuses mostly on Leone’s style and techniques instead of on background information on the filming itself. Nonetheless, there are many titillating insights, and Shickel manages to say a lot during the three-hour running time.

Most of the extras are on Disc 2:

“Leone’s West” — A 20-minute documentary about the making of the film. Includes interviews with Shickel, producer Alberto Grimaldi, author of the English dialogue Mickey Knox, and best of all, Eastwood and Wallach. There’s some very enchanting info and memories here, mostly from Knox and the two actors.

“The Leone Style” — A 23-minute documentary, really fair an extension of the first one. It spends more time on Leone’s unique techniques. The same interviewees appear here.

“The Man Who Lost the Civil War” — A 14-minute documentary that was produced separately from the DVD. It makes no mention of the movie, but is about its historical backdrop: the disastrous General Sibley campaign in Texas. Sibley appears in the film briefly, and this short documentary gives the viewer an critical insight into the world of Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes.

“Reconstructing The Splendid, the Unpleasant and the Shocking” — An 11 miniature behold into the painstaking work enthusiastic with fixing the represent and sound, restoring the slash scenes, and re-dubbing it.

“The Estimable, the Abominable and the Evil” is Sergio Leone’s fable masterpiece. While it is fragment of his Spaghetti Western Trilogy( all three films have different characters and plots), the film stands on its enjoy and really shows you how well-behaved a movie can really be. This movie has it all. It has action, drama and even some laughable relief in it. It is a timeless classic that is unforgettable. When I first saw it, I was a tiny kid and couldn’t truly delight in it as I can now at age 22.

Blondie (The Man with No Name) isn’t your typical agreeable guy. He mainly does things that suits his believe agenda. However, when compared to the murderous Angel Eyes and the greedy Tuco, Blondie is a saint. This sage involves bloodshed, shoot-outs, search for appreciate, and double-crossing. And it all takes area while the Civil War is going on, which makes things a lot more “moving” for the renowned three. The West has never been wilder or more unpredictable than it is now. This unique edition really does the film the justice it deserves. The film has been restored to the director’s fresh vision as noteworthy as possible, giving you an extra 18 minutes. You will explore the added scenes as the voices have been re-dubbed (the first time you will inspect this will throw you, as I consider that specific portion has the worst re-dubbing, but the other added scenes are done a lot better, even if you aloof witness it) . The narrate looks extraordinary and the sound is sizable. Extras included are commentary from Richard Schickel, a couple of documentaries and featurettes, poster gallery, deleted scenes and the modern theatrical trailer. Along with the nice packaging, you pick up an 8-page booklet that includes pictures from the film along with Roger Ebert’s most unique review of the film. And, you net some mini-posters included inside the packaging as well. A pleasant edition of the movie, without inquire of.

“The Apt, the Terrible and the Unsightly” is a pure triumph in filmmaking and should be seen by everybody at least once. Don’t let the fact that this is a Western throw you. I assume this can be enjoyed by everybody, and even by those who are not expansive fans of Westerns. A film filled with authentic emotion and action, this is one that shouldn’t be missed by anyone. Although Ryan is aware that the President is understandably upset that his unhurried friend was a money launderer for the drug lords, he is not aware that the National Security Advisor, Admiral James Cutter (Harris Yulin) and his CIA colleague Bob Ritter (Henry Czerny) have been given off-the-record orders to do “something about the drugs pouring into the country.” When the President declares to Cutter that the drug cartels pose a “sure and indicate distress” to the United States, the somewhat slimy admiral and Ritter unleash several covert operations within the sovereign nation of Colombia.

While Ryan does score orders to go to Bogotá and salvage out about Hardin’s financial dealings with the Cali Cartel, he is totally unaware that Cutter and Ritter have launched Operation Reciprocity, a clandestine invasion of Colombia by Spanish-speaking special-ops troops. These forces, supervised by ex-CIA field officer John Clark (Willem Dafoe), wreak havoc as they blow up drug labs and smuggling aircraft. Nevertheless, Cutter and Ritter retain Ryan in the dismal, and the right analyst and now acting Deputy Director (Intelligence) unknowingly tells a Senate subcommittee that there are no troop deployments planned for Colombia.

Further complicating Ryan’s life is the sudden discovery that his boss and mentor, Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones), is dying of cancer. Miniature does he know that his ascent to Greer’s job will propel Ryan into the middle of a life and death station in Colombia…and a constitutional crisis at home.

What makes the Jack Ryan books and movies work is not unprejudiced the slam-bam action sequences or the glimpses at the mysterious workings of the CIA, but the very concept that a CIA employee can be portrayed as an helpful and decent fellow. Tom Clancy clearly desired to demonstrate that the agents and analysts who work for the CIA are not the “dismal forces” depicted in films such as “Three Days of the Condor” or “Firefox.” Nor are they martini-swilling, trigger gratified, bed-hopping super-spies like James Bond. Ford (like Alec Baldwin before him, and like Ben Affleck after) shows Ryan has intelligence, courage, and, above all, integrity.

As in Patriot Games, Ford also shares a few short yet significant scenes with his wife and two children. Ann Archer and Thora Birch returned to play Ryan’s wife Cathy and daughter Sally, giving Ryan that most un-Bond-like sense of family and a tie to the audience.

Although the screenplay by Donald Stewart, Steven Zaillan, and John (Red Dawn) Millius strip the astronomical and complex Clancy modern to its bare essentials and changes many scenes and situations, Ford’s acting and Philip Noyce’s able directing makes Certain and Explain Difficulty a gracious action thriller. Even though as in Patriot Games the ending is rendered in a good-guy vs. bad-guy shootout (whereas in the new the ending for the villains was more subtle and thereby more chilling), this movie is serene worth watching.

The DVD I absorb is Paramount’s first barebones release. Of course, even that is an improvement over the pan-and-scan “burly shroud” VHS tape I had previously owned. The movie has been restored to its unusual Widescreen presentation, given Dolby digital audio in both English and French, Spanish subtitles, English captions, interactive menus, and the theatrical trailer. The newer version has commentary tracks, making-of featurettes, and other extras.

Not only is this a very well-directed and action-packed movie, it also has one of the best surround sound-encoded tracks available on DVD releases. If you have a dolby digital 5.1 surround system, this movie will really overwhelm you. The explosions will shake the ground….a moral theater experience without going to the theater.

Some folks reflect “The Wild One” the first movie about outlaw bikers; it’s not. “The Wild One” is about 50s beatniks who happen to tool around on British bikes (except Lee Marvin, the best thing about the movie) . If you want the proper thing, Hells Angels on Harleys, then “The Wild Angels” is the one. This is the movie that started the genre, so most of the cliches seen in subsequent drive in report expose biker features started here.

Watching THE WILD ANGELS (1966) recently for the first time in over two decades, I was struck by how much and relevant it smooth seems. Unlike some of the more starry-eyed counterculture films of the slack 1960s, this one captured quite vividly the nihilism of the era and the black side of the 1960s. The first film about the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club and initiator of a short-lived but accepted biker film craze, it presents its Harley-riding characters as cases of arrested development, unable to cope in the adult world, who have managed to fabricate their occupy social class of outcasts, drunks, losers and misfits. (The exact Hell’s Angels sued the filmmakers for defamation of character.) The film avoids blatant moralizing, but simply shows the Angels’ erratic behavior, contrasting the brutality, misogyny and pot- and alcohol-induced hedonism of the men with the occasional bursts of empathy and self-awareness shown by their female partners. In fact, one of the most compelling aspects of the film today is the work of the four main actresses, Nancy Sinatra, Diane Ladd, Gayle Hunnicutt and Joan Shawlee, neither of whom, on first discover, would seem to belong in such a film. But they all strive to originate their characters plausible, believable and human, even in the most demeaning circumstances, and add emotional layers that distinguish the film from its numerous imitators. Also worth singling out is Peter Fonda’s portrayal of Blues, the Angels’ nominal leader, whose dawning realization of his enjoy tragic blunders provides the proper heart of the film.

Also striking about the film today is its depiction of a thoroughly desolate Southern California landscape far from Los Angeles. We seek the working-class backwater districts of places like San Pedro and Venice Beach; remote desert towns mired in poverty; long, endless highways leading nowhere; and, finally, a town high in the mountains, with woods and snow, where the Angels go to bury one of their number. Some of the wanton behavior in clear scenes seems intention over the top today and was clearly added to the film for its sensational and exploitation value, but such scenes are balanced by many more that dramatize, in stark terms, the desperation of people who feel they have no choices and no hopes. It remains one of director Roger Corman’s strongest works.

Each episode in this knowing series is well written, and amazingly executed. This is not your basic slapped together Saturday morning cartoon. Samurai Jack is high art. There was never anything like it before on television, and there has not been anything to match it since.

Each episode has a theme and a message that can be translated into values and ethics that really matter in life; courage, honor, loyalty, generosity, tenacity, integrity, intelligence, humor, respect, beauty, magnanimity, and education are writ broad upon the sandaled path of Samurai Jack’s quest.

All of this is rendered in vividly fantastic and utterly fresh animation that is cinematic and record in nature, not to mention every frame could be made into a exquisite art print. Samurai Jack with his magical, ancestral katana in gripped firmly in hand, though alone in a world unusual and unknown to him, he stands resolute and triumphant against impossible odds, striving ever forward to defeat outrageous, uphold justice and mercy, and return to defend his homeland from misery and destruction, thus saving the world from a future of bondage and anxiety.

The shapely conclusion to Hideaki Anno’s little-known gem of an OVA series!

Episode 5 - After Nariko’s victory in the experimental Gunbuster, the crew returns to Earth. Ten years have passed there, while Nariko and Amano remain the same ages they were when they left. It’s mountainous watching the ramifications of this, as well as the burgeoning relationship between Amano and Ota. While Nariko has matured as a result of her adventures, Amano seems to have taken a few steps backwards…which becomes a loyal mess when the two of them have to pilot Gunbuster together.

Episode 6 - 15 years after the battle in the last episode, and Earth has moved from defense to offense against the alien aggressors. This episode is done in black-and-white and in widescreen format, which is very effective for the mood of the fragment. It’s almost like film noir in outer status. The ending of an anime chronicle is always hard to pull off and sometimes turns out to be the weakest piece of a series (like, say, “Evangelion”), but that is not the case here. This is simply an fantastic and enthralling ending, and the kick in the butt is that I can’t really say why without revealing anything. But if you’ve followed through to this point, you won’t be disappointed (well, maybe you will…I didn’t say it was an entirely contented ending) .

Gunbuster. You’ve probably heard of it before, even if you weren’t former enough to experience it first hand when it was released in 1988. US Renditions blessed would be anime fans benefit then with VHS tapes in clamshell cases with one of the most captivating and appealing mech anime releases ever. Not to mention the account and whole direction is actually a parody of many of the then novel “themes” that were current at the time. “Fan service”, the well-kept deformed characters in the science lessons, the over the top “Orderly” robots, and the now legendary “Gainax bounce” could all be seen here in this early release. Compared to many of today’s unusual efforts this OAV remains right to it’s novel Japanese title, Top O’ Nerae! or, “Aim for The Top!”. It always has and always will be at the top.

Gunbuster is the narrative of a young girl, Noriko Takaya who wants to become a state pilot like her father, who was Captain of a vessel that was attacked by substantial bug like residence aliens who are intent on finding and destroying Earth. Enrolled in Okinawa’s Spot Pilot High School for girls, Noriko begins the training to become a defender of Earth and begins a long shuffle (though through the miracle of time dilation and state depart hardly ages throughout the series) transforming from a crying nugget rookie pilot to the savior of the world. Along the plot, she is befriended by her “Coach” Ota and Kazumi Amano, the spruce talented and gifted girl who is the school’s top student and almost a shoe in for becoming a pilot.

What makes Gunbuster work, unlike many typical, “assign the world from aliens in giant robots” shows is the fact that while the prove deals with the mechs and science late it, it is really objective backdrop for the character’s growth. Mech fans don’t despair, since when the Gunbuster is finally truly unveiled (you don’t even net to observe it until halfway thorugh and then only for a short period) the valid treat begins and it becomes one of the coolest moment in 80’s, 90’s, or even new anime mech scenes/battles. The music is awesome, every single portion is perfect (note: It is known that for this US release, one part of music was changed for a training sequence so purists be warned), and the animation even for a nearly 20 year venerable OAV looks colossal partly in thanks to character designs from Haruhiko Mikimoto, the character designer for the current SDF Macross series.

Bottom line is this region is a must occupy for passe anime fans or to unusual ones who shouldn’t miss out on one of the finest OAV’s ever to be released. Gunbuster gets a 5 out of 5 no demand.

Like most baby boomers, I’ve watched this film dozens of times in the past on broadcast TV, then VHS tape, then LaserDisc … but I had never actually SEEN “The Wizard of Oz” until this newly restored DVD came out. It’s an fantastic transfer. The sepia-tone Kansas sequences are startlingly spicy and distinct, and the Technicolored world “Over the Rainbow” is truly heavenly. I found myself fascinated by details I had never noticed before: the glittering corn stalks in the Scarecrow’s field; the mirror-like floors of the Emerald City; the polished buttons on the guardsmen’s uniforms. Incredibly, even the individual grains of red sand in the Witch’s hourglass stood out and glistened! All these minor-but-sumptuous visual details served to heighten the magical spell that the film has always woven, enhancing the performances, the chronicle, and the music.

The DVD extras are a mind-boggling embarrassment of riches. The “Making Of” documentary hosted by the incomparable Angela Lansbury is worth the stamp of the DVD alone, but there’s so noteworthy more: an international poster gallery, interviews with cast members, deleted scenes, production stills, radio clips, etc, etc. There’s enough material to withhold even the most casual viewer fascinated for hours, and a accurate Oz buff will be occupied for days!

If you only bought a DVD player to study this one disc, it would well be worth the expense. Treat yourself, and descend in cherish with this classic film again … for the first time.

I was objective critized for foisting off the following review of the 3-disk DVD status as a review of the current Blu-ray. I didn’t; Amazon did. As anyone who’s been here for a while will witness, Amazon throws all DVD reviews into the same bucket, regardless of the edition. So don’t blame me.

There’s no need to discuss “The Wizard of Oz” itself, a classic among classics (though I’ll have something to say about its “philosophy” later on) . You probably want to know whether the UltraResolution transfer justifies the acquire.

It does. Oh, yes it does.

“The Wizard of Oz” has always looked suitable, one of the better Technicolor films. Unlike “Gone With the Wind”, which was generally murky and desaturated, and which UltraResolution greatly improved, I didn’t put a question to considerable enhancement for “Oz”.

Was I ever inappropriate. I stared with my jaw hanging launch. “Oz” is the best UltraResolution transfer by far — and the others were not exactly chopped liver.

The improvement in detail and sharpness is startling, especially as the unique prints did not seem obviously lacking in either. Even more improbable is the expansion of the tonal scale. Unlit scenes (particularly those in the forest and outside the “witches” castle) are now filled with rich detail. Have you ever noticed how pleasing the Winkies’ red, white, and gray uniforms are? I hadn’t — until now.

These enhancements combine execute the biggest improvement of all — a major revelation of _texture_. The “feltiness” of many costumes is distinct. The burlap of the Scarecrow’s face is now plainly visible, particularly in the close-up where he misstates the Pythagorean Theorem. And the Lion’s costume is a thick pile of fur you want to approach out and stroke. You can gawk every last strand of hair.

I’m exaggerating only slightly when I say the improvements of this UltraResolution transfer are not noteworthy less than those from cleaning the Sistine Chapel’s frescos. It’s as if layers of murk and grime — that you never even knew were there! — have been stripped away. Until you plan it, you cannot imagine what this film (that is, the recent camera negatives) _really_ looks like. It’s a shame the people who created “Oz” never got to view it this diagram.

The image quality is so high that I often felt as if I were looking through a window at live performers. (Well, almost.) No matter what versions you already have, you won’t be disappointed with this one. I watched it twice in two days, and I might even conception it a third time tonight.

My only quibble is that several matte paintings do not blend properly, because the hues at the join lines do not match those of the scene. This could have been fixed; I suspect it seemed too powerful work for a puny improvement. (A friend suggested that these sorts of things are left in because videophiles devour finding them.)

As to the differences between the two- and three-disk sets… The latter includes a packet of recent programs and promotional material of the sort we haven’t seen in 40 years ago. (Remember the 50-cent deluxe programs for road-show films? ) There’s also a region of 10 reproductions of Kodachrome publicity photographs. For this viewer, these extras alone define the higher sign.

The third disk will be of most interest to lovers of all things Oz. It includes a handsomely produced biography of L. Frank Baum (inspiring enough that you might want to gape it more than once), plus all the peaceful Oz films and a Technicolor Oz cartoon. The existence of these is celebrated to anyone familiar with the history of Oz productions, but they’ve never appeared (as far as I know) in any home-video format.

The films are problematic. The two from Baum’s production company are the best — they have style, charm, and imagination. The others are cheesy ripoffs that hold minute relation to the novel book. The Larry Semon — a once wildly-popular but now virtually forgotten cartoonist and amusing * — version is especially harmful, as it is puny more than a vehicle for Semon’s stamp of physical comedy. The Baum estate is at least partly to blame — _any_ movie version must have seemed more dazzling than none, especially as the technology to construct a convincing version of “Oz” would not exist for another 15 years.

The film’s opening titles praise the book’s “pleasant philosophy”, which seems to be either “You already have everything you need to be jubilant”, or “The acknowledge to your problems lies within yourself”. These are not so powerful “splendid” as reflections of the hard-nosed “All your problems are your beget fault” and “If you’re not a success, it’s because you’re slothful” homilies that grew out of the stout opportunity for personal development and material success this country offered.

I occupy L. Frank Baum had something a bit different in mind. “The Wizard of Oz” is a fairy account in which magic has no bearing on the issues at the center of the myth. I contain Baum wanted to discourage children from fantasizing that magic could be a solution to one’s problems.

So… he has the four principals invent a grueling hotfoot to the Emerald City, then pick up the wizard is a humbug. (What a shame the blander “counterfeit”, “fraud”, or “phony” have replaced that appetizing word.) He posesses no magic to supply wit, savor, or grit, which the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion have demonstrated they already have.

Baum’s “proper” is simple — Adore, wisdom, and courage are what we need to net through life. No one can _give_ them to us, because we _already_ acquire them, and all we need to do is impart them.

“Is that accurate? ”

“That’s all it is.”

Now… the expect you’ve been waiting for the reply to… Is the Blu-ray site worth the notice?

I viewed the Blu-ray on a Pioneer 60″ Pro Kuro, fed from a Sony BDP-S550. I also watched the DVD on the Pioneer (fed from the same Blu-ray player), and on a 36″ Sony 400-series WEGA “improved definition” TV (fed from a Sony DVP-S7000) .

The DVD remains a terrific DVD, and looks terrific on a high-quality 480i monitor. (Ogle the preceding review.) It was, and aloof is, a demo-quality DVD.

When played on the BD player, and upconverted to 1080p, the DVD’s image on the Kuro is delicate darn proper — the sharpness and detail are at least “acceptable”. But when you play the Blu-ray disk, the image goes from “acceptable” to almost-startling. Two examples… Label the enhanced detail and texture in the weather-beaten wood above the WWE’s tiresome legs. And in the crowd scenes, you can gape (objective about) every Munchkin face. There is virtually no smearing of detail.

So… should you bustle fair out in a buying frenzy and net the BD edition? It depends.

The DVD is suited enough for an suited represent on a high-quality SD monitor. But even upconverted, it isn’t capable enough for a _large_ HD present. If you have, say, a 40″ display; your BD player has a first-rate upconverter (not all do) ; and you don’t sit “on top of” the veil (as I do) ; you might inspect shrimp disagreement between the DVD and the Blu-ray.

But if you’re a video fuss-budget (as I am) and sit closer than the “experts” recommend (why _shouldn’t_ you? ), you will almost certainly rob the Blu-ray. It’s your call.

A few remarks on the extras… The wristwatch, as the kid in the Ally bank commercial says, is a portion of junk. The execute shows no particular style, wit, or imagination. And as others have said, “The Dreamer of OZ” is a sorrowful transfer, very badly unpconverted to 1080. It is not of acceptable quality, and should have been assign on the DVD disk.

I will advance succor later (I hope) with some more comments on the sound and the other extras. Forcing yourself to repeatedly perceive immense chunks of a movie, regardless of its quality, is an ennervating experience.
